Antiques and Collecting
I had a great time at the Alice Peck Day Antiques Show yesterday. I love poking through all those treasures. I like to think of antique shows as many tiny museums packed into one room, or in the case of this show, three rooms. Of course, work is never far away. What did I see the most of? Book ends, book ends everywhere! Dogs, boats, granite, ducks, you name it there they all were sitting, waiting to remind me of all the books we have at the library! We also saw quite a few clocks, bridle buckles, children’s blocks, and spoons!
The library has quite a few books on collecting and preserving antiques:
Care & repair of antiques & collectables
by Albert Jackson & David Day.
Antiques roadshow primer : the introductory guide to antiques and collectibles from the most-watched series on PBS
by Carol Prisant.
The official guide to flea market prices.
by Harry Rinker
We also have several books on specific antiques like depression glass, bottles and art glass.
While there were no treasures with my or my husband’s name on them this time (except a delicious piece of baklava) it got us thinking. If you were to collect something, what would it be? If you already collect something, how come? Do you collect by type or design? Come in and tell us about your most prized collection. Is it chess sets (my husband’s), or bowls (mine), or teapots (mine again), or rabbits (and again)?
