Canaan Historical Society Website

If you are interested in genealogy or other aspects of the history of Canaan, you must check out the Canaan Historical Society website. This great site has information about the historical museum, the history of Canaan, the locations and histories of the town cemetaries, maps, photos of historical Canaan buildings, articles on the train wreck of 1907, the Canaan Drug Store opening of 1909, and Canaan Village. The site also offers links to paintings and postcards of Canaan, and a link to the Canaan Historic District Commission. There is also a tremendous list of vital records including marriage, birth, and death records starting in 1887 and running through to the present. There are a few gaps in this information, but certainly a great reference for those of you searching for your family history. The library holds town reports back to 1916, but for those records from the 1800s, this is your best bet.
The members of the Historical Society have done an amazing job on this website, why don’t you visit the museum (open Saturdays, July through October, 1pm-4pm), or attend a meeting and let them know you appreciate their dedication!
